EDWIN H. BATES FALMOUTH, Mass. – Edwin Hill Bates, 92, died July 5, 2007, at the Royal Nursing Center. He was born June 28, 1915, in Bath, the son of Delmar and Florence (Hill) Bates. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1937 and went to work in South Paris, where he met and married Ada. He served in the Navy during World War II, and then accepted a job in the Cooperative Extension Service at the University of Maine in 1946 and lived in Orono until he retired. He received a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1961, then returned to the University of Maine and soon became the director of the Cooperative Extension Service. While living in Orono, he was very active in church and community affairs. After retiring, he moved to Sarasota, Fla., with his wife and continued to spend summers in West Bath, for many years. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ada (Bonney) Bates; two daughters, Jane B. Churchill and her husband, Thomas, of Manomet, Mass., and Nancy B. Dimitri and her husband, Robert, of Sandwich, Mass.; four granddaughters, four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Howard Bates; and a sister, Mary B. Brown. A graveside service will be held in East Sumner, at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
