MACHIAS – Eleanor (Ackley) Tibbetts Doten, 90, passed away unexpectedly March 13, 2007. She was born Sept. 1, 1916, in Cherryfield, the daughter of the late Jasper and Annie (Sullivan) Ackley. Eleanor was a 1933 graduate of Washington Academy. She was a member of the East Machias First Baptist Church, the Jacksonville Grange and the Machias Valley Senior Citizens. She worked for a number of years in Bangor and while employed by the Byron L. Gilmore Insurance Agency, founded and became a charted member of the Insurance Women of Eastern Maine. She later moved to Waltham, Mass., and was employed by Baystate Newton Waltham Bank for several years. She retired for health reasons in 1968, and returned to Maine. Eleanor was predeceased by her parents; three brothers, Herman Ackley and his wife, Eleanor, Llewellyn and Newton Ackley; and two sisters, Margaret Butcher and Barbara Baker. She is survived by brothers, Gordon Ackley and companion, Sylvia Preston, and James Ackley and wife, Mary; many nephews and nieces; son, Roger Ackley and wife, Beverly, of Grand Forks, N.D.; a daughter, Margaret Tibbetts of Florida; grandchildren, Veronica, Roger and Michael Ackley; great-nephew, Christopher Newell; and niece, Charlotte Gray, both of Connecticut. Visiting hours will be 11-1 p.m. Friday, March 16, at the First Baptist Church of East Machias, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at Jacksonville Cemetery, East Machias. Friends and family are invited for a time of fellowship at the church after the service.
