DEXTER – Eleanor Louise (Small) Berner, 83, passed away quietly Feb. 14, 2004, at the Dexter Healthcare Facility from Alzheimer’s disease. She was born Jan. 15, 1921, at Dexter, a daughter of William A. and Delma E. (Redman) Small, and a granddaughter of Dr. and Mrs. Samuel J. Redman. She graduated from N.H. Fay High School, Class of 1939, attended Nasson College and the University of Maine, Class of 1944. Eleanor served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in Washington, D.C., and New York. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, sewing and knitting. She was a member of the First Universalist Church of Dexter, and was a Girl Scout leader. For many years, Eleanor was the bookkeeper at H. L. Tillson & Co. in Dexter. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Robert Lee Berner of Dexter; a son, William R. and his wife, Susan Berner, of Rockledge, Fla.; a daughter, Rosemary L. Waller of Dexter; two grandsons, Scott R. Berner and Christopher E. Berner of Rockledge, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Lindsay N. Waller of Lancaster, England, UK, and Victoria A. Waller and her fianc‚, Daniel J. Sovetsky, of Old Orchard Beach. She was predeceased by a sister, Gaile and son-in-law, CDR Alexander E. Waller Jr. She will be missed by her family and life-long friends, including Arline Dean, Betty Whitney, Tom and Imogene Tillson, Patricia Taylor Lucas of Lemon Grove, Calif., Isabel Jacobs, Frances Hartford, Betty Mosley and Dr. and Mrs. Hans Shurman. There will no services at this time. A memorial service will be held this summer. Memorial donations may be made to the Dexter Historical Society, care of Rick Whitney, P.O. Box 481, Dexter, ME 04930. Spring interment will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Dexter.
