CALAIS – Eleanor L. Johnson, 71, died July 25, 2005, at a Calais hospital surrounded by her loving family. Eleanor was born June 16, 1934, in Red Beach in the same house where she has resided for the past 41 years. She was the daughter of the late Christian and Marjorie (Hodgins) Nielsen. Upon returning from Florida in the 1960’s, she was employed by W.T. Grant and the Hathaway Shirt Co. Later she became the tax collector and welfare director for the City of Calais, and retired in 1993 from the Maine State Motor Vehicle Department. Eleanor loved to travel and did so extensively throughout the U.S., England, Spain and France. She was a 56-year member of Sherman Bros. Unit No. 3 American Legion Auxiliary of Calais and held the offices of past unit president, county president and district president. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, awarded a life membership to St. Croix Bowling Club, past worthy matron of Orion Order of Eastern Star, Spednik Club in Baileyville, life member of Calais Rod & Gun Club, and a charter life member of the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States. Eleanor was also a life-long fan of the Boston Red Sox. Surviving are her beloved husband of 54 years, Bernard L.; two daughters, Sharon Johnson of Calais and Donna Tucker and husband, Gene, of St. Stephen, N.B.; two sons, David Johnson and his wife, Debby, of Red Beach and Chris Johnson of Calais; nine grandsons, Jeffrey, Joseph and Jason Pottle, Paul and Michael Jack, Adam and Matthew Johnson, and Nicholas and Logan Johnson; four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Casey, and Madeline Pottle, and Brianna Jack; a brother, Allen Nielsen and wife, Geraldine, of Calais; a sister, Pat Bishop and husband, Bob, of Calais; and a special niece, Peggy Brownlee. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, at the Second Baptist Church, Church St., Calais. Burial will follow in Red Beach Cemetery, Calais.
