BUCKSPORT – Elizabeth “Betty” (Gray) Shirland, 63, died peacefully Feb. 17, 2004, surrounded by her loving family, at her daughter’s home. She was born April 20, 1940, in Castine, the daughter of Norman W. and Annie Louise (Dunbar) Gray. Betty attended Orland schools and graduated from Bucksport High School. She was a spiritual amazing woman who overcame many obstacles including a serious motorcycle accident in 1976. She sustained courage throughout her life and served as an inspiration to many. She enjoyed gardening and was a member of the American Orchid Society, she loved animals and raised birds, enjoyed the outdoors and photography. Betty is survived by a daughter, Loretta (Brawn) Ouellette and husband, Gerald, of Bucksport; two sons, William Drake and wife, Tricia, of Orrington, and Jeremy Shirland and fianc‚e, Theresa Triano, of Sidney; two special grandchildren, Jacob and Jenna; her twin brother, Robert W. Gray and wife, Sharon, of Verona; her siblings, Charles N. Gray of Bangor, Samuel D. Gray of Bangor, and Emma L. Gray of Blue Hill; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; many special friends. Betty was predeceased by a son, Eric M. Brawn, in 1982. Betty’s family would like to extend their appreciation to CancerCare of Maine, and Hancock County Homecare Hospice for their assistance during Betty’s illness. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating.
