WATERVILLE – Ellen Bailey Davis died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Maine General Hospital in Waterville. She was born July 13, 1920, in Lincoln, the only child of Perley R. and Harriet DeRoche Bailey. She spent her early years in Lincoln, and then the family moved to Cherryfield. She graduated from Cherryfield Academy in 1937. On July 18 of that same year, she married Lawrence E. Davis of Sidney. They spent 39 years together until his death in 1976. They spent most of their married life in Bath, and Topsham. Despite many health problems, she was employed for a time at W.T. Grant and Bowdoin College. She was also a former 4-H Club leader, Literacy Volunteer, member of Pine Tree Camping Association and Kennebec Experimental Aircraft Association. In addition to her husband, Lawrence, she was also predeceased by her parents; an infant son, Wayne Edward; her foster sister, Lorena Williams; numerous cousins including, Frances Bailey Wood with whom she spent much time in her later years. Her indomitable spirit and zest for life will be greatly missed by her daughter, Bonnie and husband, Ron Ayotte, of Somerville, their blended family, Angela Lloyd of Manchester, Craig Ayotte of Topsham, Denise Schenk of Durango, Colo., Andrea Ayotte of Golden, Colo., and Tara Ayotte of Belgrade; two great-grandchildren, Mallory Lloyd of Manchester, and Leif Edward Alexander Basley of Durango, Colo. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Clinton Davis and wife, Martha, of Woolwich; a nephew and several nieces; and many friends and loving staff at Mount St. Joseph in Waterville, where she resided the last three years. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at South Parish Congregational Church in Augusta. If desired, contributions in her name may be made to the Resident Activity Fund at Mount St. Joseph Holistic Care Community in Waterville or a local Humane Society.
