OLD TOWN – Ellen L. Lewin, 85, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family Oct. 17, 2005 at Stillwater Health Center. She was born April 16, 1920, in Presque Isle, the oldest of 14 children born to Wallace and Lucy (Rand) Rand. Ellen grew up on the farm with her grandparents George and Bertha Rand, Aunt Helen and the Boys. She was a 1938 graduate of Presque Isle High School and a 1941 graduate of Aroostook Normal School (now part of University of Maine at Presque Isle). She taught school in a one-room school house in Westfield. In 1942 Ellen married her high school sweetheart, Harold Lewin. They adored each other and raising their children. Harold died in 1962 after a long illness. She was employed at the Aroostook County Farm Bureau for many years. She made her children’s lives full and fun. Her desire was for them to go to college and be happy. She was proud of their accomplishments. She followed her daughter to the University of Maine and later was employed at the reference desk at the Fogler Library. She made her home with Brynn and her family for many years. She married Hazen Lewin in 1980 and they enjoyed their lives together. Ellen delighted in being a mother and grandmother and loved time spent with children as well as the company of friends. Her warm and caring manner will never be forgotten. She enjoyed reading, writing and collecting. She was a member of the State Street Baptist Church in Presque Isle and enjoyed attending the Bradley Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, Shawn D. Lewin of Old Town; a daughter, Brynn Oliver and her husband, Charles, of Milford; seven grandchildren Shawn David, Jason, Steven and Kristen Lewin, all of N.J.; Joanna Morrison and her husband, Tyler, of Orono, Jennifer Becker and her husband, Christopher, of Old Town, Karen Stoddard and her husband, Richard, of Old Town; six great-grandchildren, Jacob and Julianna Morrison, Christiana and Keely Becker and Ethan and Lucas Stoddard; 12 brothers and sisters Max Rand of Southington, Conn., Elec Rand of Caribou, Robert Rand of Chapin, S.C., Harold Rand of Trenton, N.C., Janette Barker of Washburn, Sarah Knox of Presque Isle, Gary Rand of Mass., Gail Rand of Deer Isle, Marie Wandrey of Earlville, Iowa, Shirley Rand of Washburn, Margaret Turner of Washburn and Edwina Stairs of Pensacola, Fla.; a loyal friend, Joan Oliver of Old Town. She was predeceased by an infant son, Allen; her first husband, Harold; second husband, Hazen; and a brother, Weldon Rand. Friends may call from 3 p.m. Wednesday until time of service. A celebration of her life will be conducted 5:30 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 19, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson, officiating. A committal service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at the Johnson Cemetery, Presque Isle.
