NEWPORT – Elmer E. “Sank” Henderson, 85, died May 24, 2005, at a Pittsfield healthcare fac-ility after a short illness. He was born Oct. 5, 1919, in Pittsfield, the son of Elmer E. and Amy G. (Brown) Henderson. He was educated in Newport Schools. Sank was a World War II veteran serving in the Army Combat Engineers in Northern France and Rhineland. He married Phyllis E. Emerson on Sept. 15, 1950 and they made their home in Newport. He was employed as a Supervisor at H. P. Hood Inc. cheese processing plant in Newport for over 35 years. After his retirement from Hood’s he worked for over 10 years at Bud’s Shop and Save in Pittsfield. Sank was a member of the Quarter Century Club at H. P. Hood Inc., a former member of the Newport Fire Dept., and an active worker and a member of the Board of Directors of the Newport Community Food Bank in Newport. Sank and Phyllis attended the High Street Congregational Church in Newport. He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Phyllis (Emerson) Henderson of Newport; one son and his wife, Eugene and Amy Henderson of Manisitique, Mich.; his children, Robert, Amy, Melissa, Fonnie, Christina, Amanda; and their mother, Brenda Laviolette of Wilton; one daughter and her husband, Sue and Keith Brown of Washburn; and their children, Nathan and Katie of Manchester, N.H. and Sarah Brown of Portland; two brothers, Yale and Linwood predeceased him. Friends may call 2-3 and 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at the Brown Funeral Home, 34 High St., Newport. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2005, at the Brown Funeral Home with Pastor Al Worden and Rev. Dorothy Matson officiating.
