ST. JOHN – Elmer Jalbert, 73, left the Northern Maine woods on Sept. 17, 2004, after a strong battle with cancer. He was born May 20, 1931, in St. John, the son of Eddie and Grace (Pelletier) Jalbert. Elmer resided there all his life with the exception of the years he spent in the U.S. Air Force and the year and a half he lived in Cromwell, Conn. On Oct. 5, 1954, he married Greta Vaillencourt of Fort Kent, and they raised five daughters in the St. John Valley, Elizabeth Jalbert, of St. Joseph, Mo., Deanna Potter, of Frenchville, Jennifer Poulin, of Thomaston, Conn., Jessica Erdrich of St. Joseph, Mo., Joy LaCasce, of Dover-Foxcroft. Throughout his life, Elmer was an avid hunter and fisherman. He traveled the country and Canada following his passions. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and spending time at the camp his father built. Elmer retired from Maine Public Service Company to devote himself full time to operating the Northern Maine Tree Farm, a Christmas tree and landscaping business. He served on the SAD 27 school board, belonged to the VFW Lozier-O’Grady Post No. 9609 and the American Legion Martin-Klien Post No. 133, both of Fort Kent and was a lifelong Rotarian. Elmer is also survived by his brother, Maurice Jalbert of Salem, N.H.; and his sisters, Anne Romano of Glastonbury, Conn., and Jane Marin of Hillsboro, N.H.; 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday, at the Daigle & Nadeau Funeral Home in Fort Kent, and 9 a.m. Monday, until the time of departure for St. John. A Mass of Christian Burial with full Military Honors will be celebrated noon Monday, at the St. John Catholic Church in St. John with the Rev. Claude Gendreau officiating. At the families request those who wish in his memory, in lieu of flowers may donate to the Hospice of Aroostook PO Box 688, Caribou, ME 04736. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
