NORRIDGEWOCK – Elsie Dickinson Stanley, 97, of Norridgewock passed away on Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at Redington-Fairview General Hospital after a short illness. She was born Sept. 25, 1906, in Monticello, the daughter of Miles K. and Bertha (Annett) Dickinson. She graduated from Norridgewock High School in 1924, and from Farmington Normal School, Class of 1926. For several years she taught at one-room school houses in Mercer and Starks. In 1935, she married Ulmont Stanley and worked as a bookkeeper at his Pontiac Dealership. Later on she worked at Morton Motors in Skowhegan, and Central Maine Motors in Waterville, until her retirement in 1970. She was a private chauffeur for Mrs. Grace Smith. She then went to work as librarian at the Norridgewock Public Library for 21 years. She served as trustee on the library board. She worked at the Norridgewock Historical Society, she was very knowledgeable about Genealogy. In 1996, in search of her roots, she made a trip to Ireland to visit relatives, especially Reggie Annett and his family. In 2002, she received the Boston Post Cane as the oldest citizen of Norridgewock. In the fall of 2003, she donated the sign to the town of Norridgewock to be placed at the entrance of Sunset Cemetery in Norridgewock. Elsie was a member of the Village Improvement Society, former member of the Bloomfield Garden Club, a member of the Town Cemetery Committee for more than 30 years, Norridgewock Town Clerk for two years, the Annual Town Report was dedicated to Elsie in 1997. She was Ballot Clerk in Norridgewock, a life-long member of the Skowhegan Grange, a member of the Sterling Rebekah Lodge No. 95 in Madison, where she was the pianist for many years. She was a member of the Maine Municipal Association and the State Library Association, a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church in Skowhegan, where she served as organist for 40 years. Elsie was predeceased by her brothers, Kenneth, Ralph and George Dickinson; her sisters, Helen Jones and Marguerite Dunlap. She is survived by her sisters, Florence Forbes of Waterville, and Esther Burgess of Virginia; many nieces and nephews. At her request there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will take place in the spring at Oak Cemetery, Norridgewock. Donations may be made in her memory to the Norridgewock Public Library, P.O. Box 7, Norridgewock, ME 04957. Arrangements are under the direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.
