SEARSPORT – Erma Gould Higgins Madaras, 85, of Frankfort Road, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at home after a brief illness. She was born Jan. 6, 1921, in Island Falls, daughter of Clarence and Gladys (McFarland) Gould. Mrs. Madaras graduated from Island Falls High School in 1937 and pursued her nursing education at St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Practical Nursing. After working for several years in the Bangor area, she continued her nursing education at University of Maine at Augusta graduating with an associate of science in nursing in 1973. Mrs. Madaras will be remembered for many things by those who knew her and loved her well. Her children were gifted by their mom, with a love of books and respect for learning. They watched as she worked relentlessly to support her young family, and later chose to advance her nursing career despite the long commutes from Bangor to Augusta. Often they listened as she spoke of her wish to visit each state, savoring the beauty our own country offers. She enjoyed “good music” and reminisced about playing the piano and singing in church as a young girl. Mrs. Madaras was predeceased by her first husband, Ernest Higgins; and her second husband, John Madaras MD; as well as her sons, John Madaras II, Robert Higgins, and Howard Higgins. She will be missed by her children, Elwyn “Red” Higgins and wife, Donna, of Searsport, Ronald Higgins and wife, Margot, of Bangor, Rodney Higgins and wife, Lori, of Colchester, Conn., Philip Higgins and wife, Tammy, of Winterport, Erma M. Evans and husband, John, of Oakland, Lazslo Madaras and wife, Emma, of Dedham, Mass., Balint Madaras of Budapest, Hungary; a sister, Ruth of Wisconsin; a brother, Raymond of Florida; 19 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.
