HAMPDEN and BANGOR-Ernest Henry Trefethen, 97, beloved husband of Barbara (Gray) Trefethen, passed away peacefully, Dec. 5, 2005, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Aug. 12, 1908, at 100 First St., Bangor, the first child of Henry A. and Johanna (Murphy) Trefethen. Ernest enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and was stationed in Reno, Nev.; he was honorably discharged in 1945. He married the former Barbara Helen Gray Aug. 23, 1950. Ernest was a dedicated employee of Standard Shoe, on Main Street in Bangor for 50 years, retiring in 1971. While at Standard Shoe he was manager of the first floor and was also very proficient and known for the window trimming of the store displays. After retirement, he was the founder and owner of American Heritage-Coldwell Banker Real Estate, which was later sold and currently operates in Bangor. Ernest was president of the Bangor Board of Realtors in 1983. He was presented with a plaque and elected realtor of the year in 1986 by the Bangor Board of Realtors. Ernest was a former member of Hampden and Bangor Kiwanis and was also a member of American Legion Post No. 0178 of Waterville. Ernest is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Barbara of Hampden; three daughters, Margaret Estelle Dolliver and her husband, Frank, of North Franklin, Conn., Gail Marie Juber and her husband, Stan, of Canterbury, Conn. and Bonita Rose Kirby and her husband, Tom, of Norwich, Conn.; one son, Rickey Ernest Trefethen and his wife, Patricia, of Leesburg, Fla.; one sister, Donna Bridges Powell, of Dover-Foxcroft; 48 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Ralph Trefethen; and sister, Catherine Bordeaux. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 11 a.m., until time of service at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, with the Rev. Roger W. Davis, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church of Brewer, officiating.
