OLD TOWN – Ethel M. Andrews, 101, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2006, at Orono Commons Nursing Facility. She was born Dec. 30, 1904, the daughter of Edmund and Lilian (Maddocks) Andrews. Ethel was a graduate of Orono High School and continued her education at the University of Maine, Orono, graduating in the Class of 1926. She retired in 1965, following a teaching career of 40 years in Old Town. Ethel’s 40 years of teaching included two years at French Settlement (one room school), 25 years at Lewis-Stairs/Great Works School and 13 years at Jefferson Street School. She was a member of the Federated Church of Stillwater and its Annie Matthews Women’s Society, Esther Eayres Chapter of the D.A.R. Orono, Maine Teachers’ Assoc., National Retired Teachers’ Assoc. and the Women’s Club of Orono. Ethel is survived by a nephew, Stephen Abbott and his wife, Mary Lou, of Sudbury, Mass.; niece, Cora Cramer and her husband, Al, of Newtown, Conn.; niece, Ethel Abbott of Oneida, N.Y.; several great-nieces and great-nephews. The family would like to thank the Orono Commons Nursing staff for the many years of support and care of Ethel. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Lois May Abbott. There will be no visitation. A celebration of Ethel’s Life will be conducted 10 a.m. Thursday, April 6, at the Federated Church of Stillwater, with the Rev. Ron Chaffee officiating.
