ETNA – Ethel M. Hamlin, 88, died Jan. 13, 2008, at a Bangor health care facility after a long illness. She was born Sept. 27, 1919, in Dyer Brook, the daughter of Richard C. and Geneva (Friel) Brown. Ethel graduated from Corinna Union Academy, Class of 1934. She married Clarence B. Hamlin, Oct. 8, 1937, in Skowhegan. He predeceased her in 1984. Ethel worked as a stitcher at C. M. Almy, Pittsfield, for 23 years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of East Newport Grange, RSVP Volunteers, Newport Senior Citizens and Corinna Senior Citizens. She liked to dance, travel, work in her flower gardens and sew. Ethel was a member of the “Scalawags,” entertaining many people for several years. She also delivered meals to shut-ins for the Meal on Wheels program for many years. She is survived by one son and his wife, Richard and Vonnie Hamlin of Etna; one daughter, Geneva Hamlin of Newport; one sister, Grace Smart of Newport; three grandchildren, Erick Hamlin, James Walker and Lisa Brundage; three great-grandchildren, Kyle Hamlin, Jocelyn Hamlin and Cody Walker; several nieces, nephews and cousin. In addition to her husband, Clarence, she was predeceased by her brother, Percy Brown; and two sisters, Hilda Brown and Hazel Emerson. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan, 15, at Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High St., Newport.
