ETHEL MARY MARTIN BREWER – Ethel Mary Martin, 84, wife of the late Frederick J. Martin, died Dec. 23, 2003, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Jan. 5, 1919, at Dickey, the last settlement in the Allagash, the daughter of William and Alice (Walker) Hughes. Ethel worked for Freese’s Department Store office staff for several years and eventually resided at Freese’s Assisted Living, Bangor and she enjoyed her volunteer work with the Eastern Agency on Aging. She loved her photographs and she was well liked and known by those who kept her company for her Irish wit, songs and ditties. A proud and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, Ethel is survived by two sons and their wives, Fred of Brewer and Beth of Bangor, Doug and Gloria of Old Town; seven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren; three sisters, Winifred Russell of Naugatuck, Conn., Rena Hughes of Saco and Shirley Griffith of Anchorage, Alaska; one brother, Lyman Hughes of Dunedin, Fla.; many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Ethel was predeceased by a son, Nathan Martin and a grandson, David Martin. The Salvato Family will be remembered by the Martin Family, friends that were made at St. Joseph hospital over a short period of time. Ethel’s family wishes to thank the staff of St. Joseph Hospital and Brewer Rehab & Living Center, Dr. Gary Ross and Freese’s Assisted Living for the care that was given. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, Brewer, with the Rev. Joel R. Cyr, pastor, celebrant. Family and friends will be invited to a memorial Mass at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Dickey that will be announced in the summer. Burial will be in New Sweden. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Allagash Public Library, care of Faye Hafford, 894 Allagash Rd., Allagash 04774.
