BANGOR – Eugene Lee “Gene” Des Isle, 74, died April 23, 2004, at a Bangor hospital. He was born in Springfield, Mass., Nov. 12, 1929, the son of Leslie and Mattie (Card) Des Isles. Gene was the only member of his family not born in Lamoine. For 47 years, he worked in the telecommunications industry for New York Telephone, New England Telephone and Telegraph, Lucent Technologies, at the University of Maine for CTech; and at Eastern Maine Medical Center, in more recent years, for Des Isles Communications. For the pleasure of meeting new people, he worked as a courtesy van driver at Darling’s Honda. He was a member of the Eddington Salmon Club, YMCA, and a past president of the Telephone Pioneers. Surviving are his wife, Doris Des Isles of Bangor; a daughter, Donna Des Isles of Sarasota, Fla.; two sons, David and Daniel Des Isles, both of Bangor; five grandchildren, Neil, Nicole, Natalie, Leslianne, and Hannalee; one great-grandson, Caleb “Cabush”; a nephew, Jeff; four nieces, Marin, Suzanne, Rosemary, and Jacqueline. He was predeceased by siblings, Harold, Rita, and Reginald Des Isles and Madeline Lincer Carroll. At Gene’s request everyone is cordially invited for conversation and refreshments, 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at the Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor.
