BREWER – Eugene Purcell Winchester, 85, husband of 64 years to the late Frances M. (Griffin) Winchester, died Aug. 6, 2005, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. He was born May 4, 1920, in Brewer, the son of Clarence “Doc” and Hilda (Purcell) Winchester. Gene served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was employed by Getty Oil as a tank truck driver for many years. In past years, he was co-owner with his brothers, Sidney and Lonny, of the Winchester Bros. Construction Company of Brewer. Surviving are five children, Jeanine A. York of Brewer, Larry L. Winchester of Orrington, Eleanor M. Goodine and her husband, Doug, Sidney F. Winchester, all of Brewer, Robin L. Reed and her husband, Rick, of Orrington; 12 grandchildren, Dawn Lamb, Stephen York, Scott York, Cammy Hills, Derik Goodine, Jason Goodine, Nick Winchester, Amy Winchester, Phil Winchester, Michelle Winchester, Katie Reed, and Nolan Reed; 15 great-grandchildren, Madi, Maridawn, Eliot, Mandi, Bekka, Kristen, Bronson, Melissa, Cody, Alex, McKenzie, Vera Frances, Hannah, Meaghan, Kennedi; one brother, Sidney W. Winchester and his wife, Lillian, of Brewer; sister-in-law, Virginia Winchester of Bangor; brother-in-law, Merton Clough of Westbrook; one niece, Patty Reed; four nephews, Ronnie, Gene, and Jimmy Clough and Larry Winchester; and Eugene’s special dog, Sam. He was predeceased by a brother, Lonny Winchester; and a sister, Margie Clough. The family would like to offer special thanks to the staff of the Maine Veterans’ Home, for their care and loving support. A graveside service for Eugene P. Winchester and Frances M. (Griffin) Winchester, who died Feb. 27, 2005, will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson, Chaplain of Husson College, officiating.
