ST. GEORGE – Edward l. Estes, 84, died Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at Maine Veterans’ Home, Augusta, after a period of declining health. Born May 13, 1921, in Pittsfield, he was the son of Leslie H. and Annie Steeves Estes. He attended school in Pittsfield and after moving to Thomaston as a teenager, graduated from Thomaston High School, Class of 1940. Having enlisted in the National Guard at age 16, Ed served in the Army during World War II. At the time of discharge, he had attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. March 29, 1941, he married Alice Elaine Barton. The couple resided briefly in Rockland before moving to Thomaston. For several years they resided in Stamford, Conn., where he worked as manager of Lindstrom’s Boat Yard. After their children were grown, the Estes’ returned to Maine and have resided at their St. George address since that time. Ed worked at several area boat yards and was last employed as Manager of the Rockland Lodge of Elks. An avid hunter, he also enjoyed golf and was a member of the Rockland Golf Club. He was noted by friends and family as an excellent cook. He was also a member of First Baptist Church of St. George. A member of the Rockland Lodge of Elks, he was recipient of several service awards of that order. He was also a member of the Winslow-Holbrook-Merritt American Legion Post No. 1008, Rockland and on May 29, 2004 was presented a Certificate of Appreciation for his World War II service by American Legion, Unit Number One. Predeceased by one son, Robert Paul Estes in 1999; he is survived by his wife, Alice of St. George; two sons, Donald Estes of St. George, Leslie Estes and his wife, Sandra, of Norwalk, Conn.; two daughters, Linda Estes and partner, Dorothy Monteleone, of Wilton, Conn., Deana Ripley and her husband, Fred, of St. George; one sister, Marion Morse of Rockland; and 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; as well as several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland, where Rockland Lodge of Elks will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. A celebration of Mr. Estes’ life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, at First Baptist Church of St. George, Wiley’s Corner, St. George.
