PRESQUE ISLE and ASHLAND – Evelyn A. Carney, 101, wife of the late Josephelle Carney Jr. who predeceased her May 14, 1964, died May 14, 2005, at a Presque Isle health care facility. She was born April 27, 1904, in Eagle Lake, the daughter of Oliver and Meddie (Dumont) Saucier. She was a communicant of St Mary’s Catholic Church in Presque Isle. Evelyn was well known and loved and had been a mid wife in the Ashland area for many years. She was a very creative homemaker, making do with what she had, creating beautiful clothing for her family and friends. She was also known for her fortune telling and tealeaf reading abilities. Surviving her are three sons, Alvery Carney and his friend, Dora, of Ashland, Francis Carney and wife, Nancy, of Ashland and Alcide Carney and his friend, Jennie, of Presque Isle; a daughter, Florence (Carney) Pelkey and her husband, Eugene, of Presque Isle; two brothers, Marcell Soucier and Edmund Soucier, both of Rockville, Conn.; 27 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and 46 great-great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Aldein Soucier of Connecticut and Nellie Carney of Mapleton; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Oliver Carney; two daughters, Gloria (Carney) Bernier and Maxine (Carney) Holmes; two grandchildren, four great- grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; brothers, Adlore Soucier, Greggory Soucier, Henry Soucier and Oliver Soucier; two sisters, Victoria Jalbert and Josephine Chambers. Relatives and friends may call 5-9 p.m. Monday, at the Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, at St Marks Catholic Church in Ashland. Interment will be in the Lady of Snow Cemetery in Frenchville.
