BANGOR and PRESQUE ISLE Harvey Joseph Bishop, 88, died peacefully May 13, 2005, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. He was born May 6, 1917, in Hamlin Plantation, the son of Archie and Alma (Gardner) Bishop. He was the firstborn child and had three brothers and one sister. Before entering the service, Harvey was employed by Edmund Beaulier. Harvey served in the 103rd Infantry Division, Company B Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was wounded in action twice in the Asiatic Pacific conflict and saved the life of a wounded comrade during battle. He was a squad leader in combat patrols and front line fighting in Guadalcanal, New Georgia, and New Guinea. He was honorably discharged as Sergeant in Aug. 1945. After discharge from the Army, Harvey returned to Presque Isle to work in the family business of Archie Bishop & Sons as an oil burner service man and as a manager of the Sherwin Williams paint store during his career there. He also worked as a service man for the Agway Company before his retirement. June 25, 1947, Harvey married Mary Elizabeth Hagerman from Fort Fairfield. Harvey especially enjoyed hunting, fishing and some time in Florida. He was a Maine guide and was a member of the VFW Post 2599 and the American Legion Post No. 0088. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Presque Isle and served in the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Bishop of Brewer; his daughters and their husbands, Ruth and Marim Rooney of Hermon, Mary and Bob Whitehead of Amarillo, Texas; three granddaughters, Anne Violette of Delray Beach, Fla., Lisa Rooney of Palm Desert, Calif., Angela Bytheway of Kamiah, Idaho; his grandson, Aaron Whitehead of Lexington, Ky.; eight great-grandchildren; his brother and wife, Richard and Mary Bishop; and his sister, Patricia Armstrong. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, James and John Bishop. Graveside services with military honors will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor with the Rev. John Austin, officiating.
