BREWER and CHERRYFIELD – Evelyn Fickett went home to be with her Lord Dec. 8, 2006. She was born March 18, 1919, in Cherryfield, the daughter of Hollis Sr. and Josie Fickett. She grew up in Cherryfield and later moved to Brewer, where she lived most of her life. Evelyn graduated class valedictorian from Cherryfield Academy, 1935, at age 16, and began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in Cherryfield. On her very first day of teaching, she knew she had found her life’s true passion. She went on to teach in Milbridge, Veazie, Brewer High School and Brewer Junior High, for a total of 42 years in the teaching profession, retiring in 1979. Her many former students will fondly remember “Miss Fickett’s English class.” Evelyn earned her diploma from Wash-ington State Normal School, 1945; her Bachelor of Science, 1951 and her master’s in education from the University of Maine – Orono, 1963. She also took courses at Gorham State Teachers College and Boston University. Family, home and friends meant the world to Evelyn. She was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to all who knew her. Her sense of humor and loving spirit drew people to her throughout her life. Evelyn was an avid Red Sox fan and took great pleasure in following the games. She was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church, Cherryfield. She is survived and will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews, Jo Grant of Harrington, Janet Sprague, Dick Fickett and Paula Farren, all of Cherryfield, Ann Radtke and Tommy Fickett of Norfolk, Va., Billy Fickett of Biddeford, Sandra Dill of West Warwick, R.I., and Bobby Fickett of Seabrook, N.H. She is also survived by two special great-nieces, Pam Nelson of Orono and Patty Duran of Brewer; two sisters-in-law, Kay Fickett of Cherryfield and Arlene Fickett of Norfolk, Va., and many other great-nieces and great-nep-hews. She will sadly missed by special friends, Maureen Packard, Brian Worcester, Bob and Jean Sigler, Paul Shibles, Charlotte Kaser; and her sister, Esther. She was predeceased by her sisters, Marguerite Tucker, Marie Grant; and bro-thers, Paul, Harold and Hollis Jr. She was also predeceased by a sister-in-law, Esther Fickett; and a nephew, Donnie Fickett. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank her caregivers at Stillwater Health Care, Bangor. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Milbridge. There will be no visiting hours at Evelyn’s request.
