PORTLAND – After coping with illness over the past year, Evelyn Archibald passed away quietly Dec. 17, 2007, at the Barron Center, Portland. Eve-lyn was born Dec. 23, 1920, in Caribou. Her parents were Byron and Olive Hatch. It was a difficult year made easier for her by the many friends and family, who kept a close vigil on Evelyn and did their best to comfort her during these past few months. Rare was there a day that someone close wasn’t with her during the day or evening and the family wishes to thank all who provided the attention and care she needed, including the very caring staff of the Zolov unit at the Barron Center. She was a modern woman in the 1950s, working full time to help provide for the family. Porter and Evelyn worked as a team to support their children doing both full time work and household chores together. Her employment included daycare, hospital administrative work and several years at the Barron Center in social services. She had two brothers, Charles and Silas; as well as a sister, Ida. All have predeceased her, as well as her devoted husband, Porter Arch-ibald, who married her in 1939. Evelyn is survived by her three children, David, Diane and Gary; and her nephew, Richard Hatch. In addition she has six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was very proud to tell people about her grandchildren and the next generation. There will be a memorial service for Evelyn 2 p.m. Dec. 30, at Thornton Heights Methodist Church, South Portland, with coffee afterwards. Arrangements made by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Somerset Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 453, Skowhegan, ME 04976. The family invites all of her friends to help celebrate Evelyn’s life and share stories with each other. There will be a second service in the spring when her ashes will be interred with her husband’s remains in Caribou.
