OLD TOWN – Evelyn Mae (Waye) Jordan Ireland, 83, went home to be with the Lord Feb. 12, 2004, at an Orono health-care facility. She was born Feb. 3, 1921, in Old Town, the fifth of seven children of Murray L. and Maude (Feero) Waye. Evelyn graduated from Old Town High School. In 1948, she became a single parent and worked three jobs to provide for her three precious daughters. Her unfailing faith in her God and a strong work ethic was her constitution for survival and success. She was employed by Woolworth’s, by the dietary department at the University of Maine, and retired from Sears Roebuck & Co. Evelyn was an active member of the United Baptist Church of Old Town, where she served as Sunday School teacher, assistant Sunday School superintendent, Pioneer Girls, and in other church ministries and had been recognized for more than 40 years of service to the Sunday School Program. Her generosity and wonderful sense of humor was extended to all who had the good fortune to know her. She is survived by three devoted daughters and their husbands, Gladys Larson and her husband, Raymond, of Winter Haven, Fla., Carolyn Mooney-Wegerdt and her husband, Theodore, of Hermon and Winter Haven, Fla., Evelyn “Cookie” Wood and her husband, Warren, of Brethren, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Olive Knights of Brewer and Lavada Dubay of Augusta; a brother, Lawrence Waye of Old Town. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 47 years, Chauncey A. Ireland on Nov 1, 2002; two brothers, Lyman Waye and Preston Waye; and a sister, Margaret Waye. Friends may call 5-7 p.m. Saturday at the Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A celebration of her life will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at the United Baptist Church of Old Town with the Rev. Bruce Stevens, officiating. Spring interment will be at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town. Immediately following the service all are invited to join the family in the fellowship hall for refreshments and continued fellowship.
