STOCKHOLM – Fernald E. Anderson, 88, died May 28, 2004, at a Caribou health-care facility, after a brief illness. He was born June 23, 1915, at Stockholm, the son of John and Alma (Peterson) Anderson. Fernald attended Stockholm Schools and graduated from Caribou High School. In 1941, he entered the U.S. Army Air Force, serving in the European Theater during World War II, he was stationed at bases in England, France and Belgium. Upon his return from the military duty, he was married to Ingrid L. Ek on Sept. 19, 1946. A grocer for more than 50 years, Fernald owned and operated Anderson’s Grocery from 1972, until his retirement. He also owned and operated Anderson’s Camps at Madawaska Lake for 12 years. Active in Civic affairs, Fernald was a past Stockholm Selectman, served on the town planning board, and was Community Civil Defense Director. He was also Chairman of the Stockholm Centennial Committee and was active in area Scouting. He was a member of the Caribou Lodge No. 170 AF and AM, was very active in the Nordic Lakers Snowmobile Club, and was also a Director of the Stockholm Cemetery Association. Fernald was a life member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Stockholm, where he served on the church council and was a former treasurer. Active in veteran’s issues, he was a Charter Member of the Revitalized American Legion, where he began service as an Adjutant and Post Commander. Fernald later served as County and District Commander before becoming State Commander in 1957-1958. He was a life member of the Perkins-Plourde American Legion Post No. 136 of Stockholm and the Fort Kent VFW No. 9609. He was also a Member of the 40 and 8 Honor Society of the American Legion. An outgoing individual Fernald was the life of the party. He enjoyed socializing with his friends and could often be found at parties and gatherings playing honky-tonk piano for those present. He loved hunting season when he and friends would stay in camps back in the woods playing the card game knock-out, long into the November nights. He is survived by a son, Gale Anderson of Stockholm; two brothers, Frederick and Francis Anderson, both of Stockholm; one sister, Vivian Anderson of Stockholm; a grandson, John Anderson of Stockholm; a granddaughter, Jillian Adams of Caribou; special niece, Carolyn Ziegler; and nephew, Peter Anderson and his wife, Diane. For 60 years Fernald stayed close to Military Comarads, Joe O’Kelly and Sid Hampton. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years on April 11, 1999; and by three brothers, Clarence Anderson, Elwood Anderson, Warren Anderson; and by one sister, Astrid Sandstrom. Family and friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover St., Caribou. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Stockholm, with the Rev. James Morgan, pastor officiating. Following the service all are invited to a reception in the Church Hall. Graveside Committal Services for Fernald will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2004, at the Stockholm Cemetery, Stockholm. Donations in Fernald’s memory may be made to the Stockholm Cemetery Association, Perpetual Care Fund. Envelopes will be available at both the Church and the funeral home.
