EAST MACHIAS – Ferne Elaine (Brooks) Pennell, 60, died Jan. 2, 2004, at a Machias hospital after a courageous nine-year battle with cancer. She was born June 10, 1943, at Cherryfield, the daughter of Ray and Louise (Davis) Brooks. She graduated from Cherryfield Academy and was employed by Milliken textile mill for many years until it closed and was employed by Down East Community Hospital for about 15 years. She loved spending summers at their cottage on Bog Lake and camping with family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Keith A. Pennell Sr.; three children, Cindy Mawson and husband, Jason, of Machias, Keith Pennell Jr. and wife, Dalla, of Machias, Valerie Carter and husband, Brent, of Harrington; two sisters, Joyce Allen and husband, Eugene, of Hampden, Gloria Merritt and husband, Peter, of Denmark; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Ferne was predeceased by her parents, and a brother, Ray (Sonny) Brooks. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Machias, with Pastor John Sprague officiating.
