BROOKLIN – Frances A. Friend, 74, died peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. Frances was born Aug. 30, 1933, in Sedgwick, to Ira and Lorene (Dunn) Christy. She graduated from Sedgwick Grammar School and attended high school at George Stevens Academy. She was married to Basil W. Friend Sr. for 55 happy years. Basil and Frances settled in West Brooklin for the first five years of marriage. They moved to Blue Hill in 1956, where they raised three children. They returned to West Brooklin in 1977, to the place they would always call home. Aside from being a homemaker, she enjoyed cooking for Blue Hill summer residents. She was proud to be the first ever teacher’s aide at Blue Hill Consolidated School. She enjoyed her time as a caregiver for many elderly people. Frances and Basil spent seven years at Sweetser Children’s Home, Saco, as childcare workers. Frances adored her family more than anything. She enjoyed family gatherings at their camp in West Brooklin, and winters on Carter’s Point. She loved cooking, gardening, crocheting and crewel, as well as other crafts. Frances has attended the North Sedgwick Baptist Church. Frances is survived by her husband, Basil W. Friend Sr.; daughter, Margo Gray and Michael Conary; son, Basil Friend Jr. and wife, Laurie Friend; daughter, Cheryl Roy and husband, Mike Roy; grandchildren, Jody and Stu Palmer, Jenny and Jeff Baroody, James Friend, Julia Friend and fianc?, Rob Ruddy, Tom and Becky Pickering, Chris and Samantha Pickering, Andrew Pickering; great-grandchildren, Ashley and Brandon Palmer, Sara, Emma, Mara, Layla Pickering, Alexandra, and soon to arrive Connor Pickering; sisters, Elaine Wessel and family, Peggy Wood and family; many nephew, nieces, and friends including, Carlton C. Gray Jr. She was predeceased by her parents; and her brother, George H. Christy; and beloved pets, Muffin, Mittens, Happy Cat, and Daisy. There will be a graveside service at a date and place to be announced.
