ELLSWORTH – Eleanor J. Webber, 96, died Sept. 5, 2007, at an Orono health care facility. She was born Jan. 27, 1911, in Ellsworth, the daughter of Harry S. and Lula M. (Pomeroy) Jones. Eleanor graduated from Ellsworth High School, in 1929. She married Robert W. Patten, Sept. 28, 1929, they had two children, Robert and Marjorie Ann. Eleanor went to work for W. Blaine Davis as a bookkeeper until the business was sold in 1944. From 1944 to 1958 Hinckley’s owned and operated the business. In August 1958, the location burned and was moved to Washington Junction as a wholesale business. The business was sold to a Massachusetts company and liquidated in 1978, and it was at that point that Eleanor retired. She married Roland B. Webber, in 1975. Eleanor had been a member of the Nokomis Rebekah Lodge for more than 50 years. She was noble grand and past noble grand. She had the honor of the degree of Chivalry Restored by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Eleanor is now a member of the Rowena Rebekah Lodge No. 91. In 1974, Eleanor joined the Senior Citizen Club and was past president, secretary and currently treasurer and had been a member for more than 19 years. In 1978, she had been a member of the Meals for Me and was secretary and treasurer; a past president in 1984 of the Daughters of Union Veteran of the Civil War; past president of the Canton Bangor No. 14 Ladies Auxiliary; and a member of the Advisory Council for the Eastern Task Force. She was recognized by the Bayside Grange No. 276 and received the Service to the Community Award in May 1982; a member of the Down-east Transportation board at its’ inception and served for 15 years. Eleanor worked with her husband, Roland to get the building for the citizens, now known as the Union River Estates, where she served as chairperson from 1979 to 2006. She was well known for her bowling ability in her native state of Maine and all throughout the eastern U.S. She was inducted into the Candlepin Hall of Fame in 1978 and the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. Eleanor had been a five-time state champ and world champion in 1972. Eleanor had a rare blood type and continued to donate and was working on her 18th gallon. Eleanor is survived by daughter, Marjorie Ann Betts of Brewer; two grandsons, Frank H. Betts III, and James R. Patten; four great-grandchildren, Michael B. and Tavia D. Betts, and Jalisa B. and Brenda J. Patten; one great-great-grand-daughter, Adelaide L. Betts; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Robert A. Patten Jr.; and by her husbands, Roland and Robert; sister, Roxanna Sanborn; and brother, Harry S. Jones Jr. Friends are invited to call 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7. Interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth.
