CALAIS – Edward “Spud” Wheelock, 76, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, at his home. Spud was born Oct. 29, 1930, in Calais, son of the late Edward and Louise (Barnard) Wheelock. He graduated from Calais Academy, Class of 1947. Upon graduation, Edward joined the U.S. Air Force. He was a veteran of the Korean War and retired in 1971. The same day he retired from the Air Force, Spud started his first day with the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked for 20 years. Edward was a member of Calais United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing cards, bingo, nature walks, traveling and reading. In addition to his parents, Spud was predeceased by six brothers and four sisters. Surviving are his two children, Forrest Wheelock and his partner, Gerard Turmelle, of Bangor, and David Wheelock and his wife, Barbara, of Bangor and Fort Meyers, Fla.; a step-daughter, Lisa Weeks and her husband, Andrew, of Woodstock, New Brunswick; three sisters, Rita Buote of Lawrence, Mass., Ruth Hartford and her husband, Bud, of Baring, and Muriel “Molly” MacArthur of Calais; seven grandchildren, Forrest Jr., Essla, Hannah, Carrie, Joseph, Daniel and Denver; four great-grandchildren, Lillian, Lainey, Jillian and Joey Jr.; and many nieces and nephews. Spud will also be lovingly remembered by Forrestine Weber Hammond and Elizabeth Jeanne Harris. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Calais United Methodist Church, 849 Main St., Calais, with Pastor Karen MacDuff officiating.
