OLD TOWN – Fran Cowan passed away Dec. 5, 2006, of renal failure at an Orono health care facility. She was born Nov. 20, 1930, in Peabody, Mass., the daughter of J. Milton and H. Geraldine (Chapman) Harvey. Fran was raised in Old Town and attended local elementary schools and she graduated from Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, Nashua, N.H. Then she graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Springfield, Mass. Fran worked as a psychiatric nurse at the Institute of Living, Hartford, Conn., and at the Columbus State Hospital, Columbus, Ohio and briefly at the former Bangor Mental Health Institute, Bangor. She was also a charge nurse at the former Eastport General Hospital, Eastport, and a part-time night supervisor at Community General Hospital, Fort Fairfield, for 21 years. Fran was a communicant of Holy Family Parish. Everyone who knew Fran knew she had a passion for the written word. She was predeceased by her parents. Fran is survived by her husband of 47 years, Jim; daughter, Sheila Rogers of Bridgeton; son, Christopher Cowan and his wife, Suzette, of Derry, N.H.; grandsons, Sean Rogers of Bridgeton and Chad, Kevin and Nickolas Cowan of Derry, N.H. and many dear friends. There will no visiting hours. Committal prayers will be recited 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town, with a memorial mass at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Parish, Old Town, with the Rev. Robert Vaillancourt, celebrant. Friends and family are invited to a luncheon at the Parish Hall after the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Family Parish, Building Fund, 429 Main St., Old Town, ME 04468 or a charity of one’s choice. Fran and her family extend their gratitude to the doctors and staff at the Peritoneal Dialysis Center at Eastern Maine Medial Center for their care, support and companionship during her years on home and hemodialysis. Arrangements are under the care of Birmingham Funeral Home.
