BANGOR – Frances M. Latno died Nov. 24, 2006, at the Maine Veterans’ Homes, Bangor, after a brief illness. Frances was born Sept. 19, 1921, in Bradley, the daughter of Leon and Arlene (Spruce) Latno. After graduating from Old Town High School at the age of 16, Frances attended Beal Business College, Bangor. She was employed as a clerk-stenographer at the military base in Presque Isle and for the Farm Home Administration, Caribou. Frances also worked for the Stanley J. Leen Co., Bangor. In 1944, Frances enlisted in the WAAC and after training at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., was stationed at the Army air base in Great Falls, Mont. After leaving military service, she was employed by the Army Audit Agency at the San Francisco Regional office. In 1950, Frances returned to Maine after being critically injured in an automobile accident. She lived the remainder of her life with courage and determination to overcome her injuries. Frances enjoyed gardening, playing cards, her Beano friends and crossword puzzles. She was a life-long member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion Post No. 84, Orono. She was predeceased by a brother, Leon Latno Jr. Surviving are a brother, Richard Latno of Bakersfield, Calif.; two sisters, Sr. Mary Latno, SCIM of Biddeford and Martha Latno of Bradley; several nieces and nephews. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at the Bangor Maine Veterans’ Homes connected with D Unit for the wonderful and compassionate care Frances “Sadie” has received there during the last three and a half years. It was truly her home away from home. There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 27, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Bradley. Immediately after the service, all are invited downstairs to the church hall for a light luncheon. Interment will be private at a later time. Arrangements under the care of Birmingham Funeral Home, Old Town. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Maine Veterans’ Homes Activity Fund, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, ME 04401.
