BROOKLIN – Frank L. “June” Day Jr. passed away Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006. He was born June 10, 1920, in Brooklin, son of the late Frank L. Day Sr. and Myrtle Nevells Day. He graduated as valedictorian of Brooklin High School in 1938. After graduating he worked on the Deer Isle Bridge and then served in the armed forces until the end of World War II. His battalion participated in the construction of the bridge over the Rhine, the largest pontoon bridge ever built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under fire. When he returned home, he joined his father and brother in establishing the Frank L. Day & Sons Boatyard on the Benjamin River in Brooklin. He’s best know for his good nature, his patience and graciousness. He was also respected for his quality in lobster boats. His boat shop was a very common calling spot for the locals and visitors alike. His career consisted of 60 years of building wooden boats. He was known for his love of good food, a good story and good company. He was a member of the Brooklin IOOF No. 133 Odd Fellows Hall. He was devoted to his family and was predeceased by his brother, Arno Nevells Day. He is survived by his sister, Mary E. Hawkins; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Day; his niece, Lois Washburn and Mary Colcord, both now residing in New Hampshire; nephews, Stephen Day of New Mexico, James Day of New Brunswick, Canada, Havilah Hawkins II of Sedgwick and Ronald Hawkins of Camden.
