FRANKLIN J. VAUGHAN EAST MACHIAS – Franklin “Frank” J. Vaughan, 71, died Jan. 26, 2004, at Down East Community Hos-pital in Machias. He was born April 17, 1932, in Hot Springs, Ark., the only child of James A. and Ermina Emogene (Small) Vaughan. Frank grew up in Chicago, Ill. and graduated from Hyde Park High School. He obtained an AA degree in business management from Wilson Junior College in Chicago. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict as a U.S. Naval advisor to the Republic of Korea Navy. After discharge from the Navy, Frank attended Texas Western College in El Paso, Texas and the University of Arkansas, Little Rock Graduate School. He had additional training in CREI Radar, Computer and Servomechanism Technology, U.S. Navy Electronics Technician and Missile Master Training with RCA. Throughout his almost 20 years of service with RCA, Frank considered his tow most rewarding positions were the manager of DEWLine at Barter Island, Alaska, and manager of technical operations under contract to NASA, Gilmore Creek Tracking Station, Fairbanks, Alaska. After moving to Hot Springs, Ark., Frank and his wife, Karen, owned and operated Holland’s Hardware. After buying property on Gardner’s Lake in 1983, they moved to Maine and built their retirement log home. Never one to retire, he went to work for Union 102 School District in 1987 as Director of Physical Plant and Transportation, a position he still held at the time of his death. Frank loved the ocean, fishing, and living in the peace and quiet of the woods on Gardner’s Lake. Frank was predeceased by his parents and one grandson, James Paul Vaughan Jr. Frank is survived by his wife, Karen K. Vaughan; one son, James P. Vaughan of Twin Falls, Idaho; two daughters, Virginia “Ginger” McKee and her husband, Donald, of Two Rivers, Alaska, and Edith Jean Sands and her husband, Basil, of Fairbanks, Alaska; four grandchildren, Matthew Lebeau, Eva L. Webb and her husband, Jason, Tyler Basil Sands and Dylan Paul Weaver Sands; two great-grandchildren, James Harris Webb and Hailey Victoria Webb. He also leaves behind a very special cousin, John Goff and his wife, Ann, of Hot Springs, Ark. A memorial in celebration of his life will be held at the Rose M. Gaffney gymnasium, 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2004. Donations can be made in his name to the American Lung Association of Maine, P.O. Box 2109, 122 State St., Augusta 04338-2109.
