FREDERICK GORDON STEWART WATERFORD, CONN. and TRENTON – Frederick Gordon Stewart, of 10 Jordan Tenn., died Jan. 27, 2004, at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, Conn. Gordon was born Feb. 18, 1912, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, the son of David James and Agnes Russell Stewart. He spent his early childhood in Saint John and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, surviving the Halifax Harbor explosion of 1917. He graduated from Malden (Massachusetts) High School and went on to study art at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Corcoran Gallery School and the Massachusetts College of Art. He received his A.B. degree from Harvard University and also the Old Lyme Art Museum. He has exhibited at the Burlington Art Association, the Wilmington Art Festival, the Copley Society, Wilmington Public Library, Reading Art Festival, all in Massachusetts; as well as the Whittier Gallery in New Hampshire, the Times Herald in Washington, D.C., North Yarmouth Academy and at Westbrook College. After working in Washington, D.C., as a cartographer for the Navy during World War II, he became a publications designer for the Internal Revenue Service for 20 years. He then began a 10 year teaching career, teaching art in Newbury, Salisbury, Byfield, Wilmington and Reading, all in Massachusetts, as well as at North Yarmouth Academy in Maine. He was affiliated with the Copley Society and the Harvard Club of Boston. He was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret Young Stewart; a brother, Russell Stewart; and his son-in-law, Victor Lookkin. He is survived by his wife, Carol Snow Stewart of Waterford, Conn.; his sister, Elizabeth Robinson of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three children, Diana Stewart of New York City, Robert Stewart of Casablanca, Morocco and Carol Doody of Old Orchard Beach; two granddaughters, Rebecca Treat of Merrimack, N.H. and Dawn Stewart Lookkin of New York City; a great-granddaughter, Rylie Ann Treat of Merrimack, N.H.; son-in-law, Beecher Doody of Old Orchard Beach; several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, in the Huntington Street Baptist Church, 29 Huntington St., New London. Calling hours will be held for one hour prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis, 1685 Branham La., Suite 227, San Jose, CA 95118. The Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, New London, is handling arrangements.
