BASS HARBOR – Frederick Hawthorne Wake, 82, died Monday, June 25, 2007, at Mount Desert Island Hospital, Bar Harbor. He was born Aug. 16, 1924, in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of the late Walter and Marian (Hawthorne) Wake. He lived in Youngstown, Ohio, until he entered the Naval Air Service in January 1942. He served on a B-24 in North Africa and England until his discharge in 1945, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Upon his return to the U.S., he resided in Trenton, N.J., near his parents. There he met and married his wife of 59 years, Kathryn Virginia Lacy. Fred worked at U.S. Steel for 30 years, retiring in 1982. He was director of U.S. Steel Men’s Chorus and district commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America. Fred was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 77 of Southwest Harbor and was raised in Masonic Column Lodge No. 120, New Jersey. He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 2085, New Jersey, and a member of the American Legion, Southwest Harbor. He was also a 50 plus-year member of the Masons. He was a longtime member of St. Matthias Episcopal Church, Trenton, N.J., and had been a member of St. Andrew Episcopal Church of Seal Cove and St. John Episcopal Church of Southwest Harbor since 1983. He is survived by his wife Kathryn; three children, Frederick Edward, Kathryn Anne Heyner, and Mary Anne Janes; four grandchildren, Marissa Esposito, Katie Heyner Peterson, Michael A. Esposito, and Matthew Heyner; Jennifer Hopkins, who was thought of as a granddaughter; and one brother, Walter A. Wake. There will be a gathering of family and friends 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, with a Masonic service 6:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Friday, June 29, at St. Andrew Episcopal Church, Seal Cove.
