PORTLAND – George C. Verenis, 89, of Norway, passed away peacefully, Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006. He was born Jan. 12, 1917, in Portland, the son of Constantino and Helen Yamakakis Verenis. He graduated from Norway High School in 1935. He served as a medical non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Army during World War II, after having received his training at Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, D.C. After his discharge from the Army, he returned to Norway to take over the family business, Verenis Grocery Store & Deli. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Norway; a son, Parnie of Columbia, Md.; a daughter, Barbi of Sausalito, Calif.; a sister, Marian McMorran of Lewiston. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27 at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway. Those who wish may make memorial gifts in his memory to Stephens Memorial Hospital, The Weary Club of Norway or Norway Memorial Library, children’s programs.
