ELLSWORTH and KOLOA, Hawaii – George Cyrus Allen, 72, of Ellsworth, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at his home in Koloa, Hawaii. For the past 10 years, George fought valiantly against an uncommon blood disorder known as MDS, he more recently developed melanoma to which he succumbed after a short but courageous battle. He was born May 24, 1931, in Melrose, Mass., the son of M. Elizabeth (Cummings) Allen and R. Thurston Allen. George graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1949, was a graduate of MCI and the University of Maine, Class of 1954. He served two years in the Army, stationed in Germany during the post war U.S. occupation. In 1957, George started with his father and grandfather, a small blueberry processing freezer, pioneering the use of IQF in the blueberry industry. In the late 1960’s, with a partner, George built the Ellsworth Shopping Center and Holiday Inn. Over the course of his life he bought and sold much real estate and was a successful entrepreneur. In almost all of his business endeavors George relied on and greatly appreciated the input and efforts of his longtime business partner, best friend and brother, Roy. George was an avid sports fan his entire life. While he had many passions and loved to enthusiastically share them with his family and friends, his greatest joy came from traveling with his wife, Beverly. Together they were able to visit every continent and many regions and countries. George was predeceased by his parents; his son, Mathew S. Allen; and daughter-in-law, Nora (Mellon) Allen. He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly (Smith) Allen of Franklin; his sons, Gregory G. Allen of St. Charles, Mo., Jason T. Allen and Jennifer Janes of Trenton and Andrew P. Allen and Alice (Bolstridge) Allen of Ellsworth; four grandsons, Christopher G. Allen, Joseph T. Allen, Michael A. Allen, Justin P. Allen and his favorite granddaughter, Rachel J. Allen; two brothers, Peter T. Allen of Union, Roy P. Allen of Ellsworth and his sister, Loraine (Allen) Saunders of Southwest Harbor ad their spouses, as well as many nieces and nephews.
