LINCOLN – George Eugene Leighton, 81, husband of Louise (Tash) Leighton, died June 19, 2005, surrounded by his loving family at a Lincoln hospital, after a long illness. He was born Feb. 22, 1924, in Lincoln, the son of Eugene and Vanonia (Gesner) Leighton. George was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army from June 15, 1943 to March 30, 1946, serving in both the European and the Pacific Theaters. He was a member of the VFW and the Lincoln Veterans Honor Guard. He was a member of the Lincoln Center Baptist Church. In addition to his wife of 58 years (they were married Aug. 24, 1946); he is survived by a son, Gary Leighton of Lincoln; two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Michael Haun of Bangor and Nancy and David King of Westbrook; eight grandchildren, Heather and her husband, Daniel Lamson, of Old Town, Nathan and Ryan Leighton of Lincoln, Joshua, Bethany and Rebekah Haun of Bangor, Jacob and Adam King of Westbrook; a great-grandson, Aiden Lamson; siblings, William and Jennie Leighton of Lincoln, Orville and Ella Leighton of Brewer, Patricia Leighton and Catherine Thompson of Lincoln, James and Pat Leighton of Bangor and Mary and Donald Gaudreau of Hermon; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Ruby Snyder, Garland Leighton and Frank Leighton. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, at the Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home, with Pastors William Bewell and Clayton Crocker officiating. Interment will be in Lincoln Cemetery.
