ORRINGTON – George Edward Shaw passed away Feb. 15, 2007, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. He was born Feb. 20, 1926, in Dover-Foxcroft, the son of Frank W. Shaw and Annie M. (Carver) Shaw. George attended the Orrington elementary school through eighth grade and one year of high school. He was inducted into the U.S. Navy March 10, 1944, and proudly served on the USS Missouri, BB-63. George fought in World War II and was on hand when Japanese officials boarded the USS Missouri to sign the surrender treaty officially ending World War II. He was honorably discharged in May 1946. He then was married April 16, 1949, to his wife of 57 years, Gloria M. (Young) Shaw. George was an auto mechanic, he loved hunting and fishing, especially with his friend, Marvin Look of Damariscotta. He was a member of the VFW in Orrington. George was predeceased by his parents; and a son, George Edward Shaw Jr. George leaves behind his wife, Gloria M. (Young) Shaw, six daughters, Lauretta Bragdon and husband, Steve Bragdon, of Searsport and family, Linda Dunifer and husband, Chris Dunifer, of Hermon and family, Ielda Shaw of Dedham, Rhonda Guerrette and husband, Donald Guerrette, of Newport and family, Anita Petrello and husband, Savario Petrello, of Allenstown, N.H., and Kaileen Runnells and husband, Brian Runnells Sr., of Orrington and family; one brother, Frank W. Shaw and wife, Avis, of Orrington and their family, 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and their families. Friends are welcome to call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer. A graveside service with military honors will be held at Marston Cemetery, Orrington, in the spring, at a date and time to be announced.
