GEORGE J. PAPPAS IPSWICH, Mass.- George J. Pappas, 94, husband of Chrissi G. Pappas and owner of Ipswich Shellfish Co., died Saturday evening, March 22, 2008, after a short illness. He died at his home surrounded by his family. Born June 12, 1913, in Ipswich, Mass., he was the son of the late John and Jennie (Gianakas) Pappas. Mr. Pappas was raised and educated in Ipswich, Mass. He was a life-long member of Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, Ipswich, Mass. He attended Burdett College, Boston and also attended Boston University. He also took many Harvard University extension courses. 72 years ago Mr. Pappas founded Ipswich Shellfish Co. In addition to owning Ipswich Shellfish Co., he also owned Connecticut Shellfish, Maryland; United Shellfish and two companies of Maine shellfish. Mr. Pappas was a member of Ipswich Rotary Club and a member of John T. Heard Masonic Lodge, Ipswich, Mass. He was a former president of Greek Orthodox Church’s Council, Ipswich, Mass. He was a former director of Bay Bank, Beverly, Mass. Mr. Pappas was a gentleman and a scholar. Mr. Pappas is survived by, in addition to his wife, Chrissi of Ipswich, three children, Estelle Sally Maistrellis of Rockport, Arnelle Meyer of Maine and Alexander George Pappas of Ipswich, Mass.; four grandchildren, Christopher Maistrellis of Philadelphia, Peter Meyer of Maine, Katerina Pappas of Ipswich, Mass., and Chrissi Victoria Pappas, also of Ipswich, Mass. Mr. Pappas was expecting his great-grand-daughter, Sophia Christine Maistrellis, April 2. He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, Thomas Pappas of Ipswich, Mass., Leo Pappas of Florida, Christine Tilas of Beverly, Mass., and Mary Bona, also of Beverly, Mass., and also survived by many nieces and nephews. Mr. Pappas was predeceased by two sisters and four brothers, Helen Stevens, Louis Pappas, Angelo Pappas, Arnold Pappas, Nasha Carderilli and James Pappas; by his grandson, Philip Maistrellis. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, at Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, Lafayette Road, Ipswich, Mass. Burial will be at New Highland Cemetery, Ipswich, Mass. Visiting hours will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Morris Funeral Home, 45 North Main St., Ipswich, Mass., relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Masonic services will be conducted 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
