OLD TOWN – George L. King, 92, passed away unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at a Bangor hospital surrounded by his family. He was born April 6, 1911, in Orono, son of the late Louis H. and Hanna (Paynter) King. George was a member of the Old Town Elks Lodge BPOE 1287, Masonic Lodge AF & AM No. 60 of Old Town. He was a life long member of the Salmon Club in Veazie, where he spent many hours playing cribbage with his friends. He enjoyed spending time at Chimo Pond. George was an avid outdoorsman, especially enjoying fishing and hunting with his son and grandsons. He was the owner of George L. King and Son Construction Company for many years. He was a respected, well-known contractor having proudly built over 150 houses with his son and grandsons. George and Dorothy had just recently celebrated a 70th wedding anniversary with family and friends. He is survived and will be sadly missed by his wife, Dorothy (Braley) King of Old Town; daughter, Jacqueline Gardner of Williamstown, N.C.; a son, Donald King, whom he had a special relationship and his wife, Nancy, of Old Town; daughter, Sharon LaFlamme and her husband, Bill, of Old Town; daughter, Penny Sue Halberstadt and her husband, John, of Kenneth Square Pa.; daughter, Denise King and her husband, George, of Bradley; brother, Edward King of Farmington; 16 grandchildren, who all loved him dearly; 31 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Douglas; 10 brothers and sisters; and a son-in-law, Pete Gardner. A Celebration of Life will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday at the Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, with the Rev. Ron Chaffee officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Federated Church of Stillwater, P.O. Box 386, Stillwater, ME 04489.
