JONESPORT – George M. Chandler, 90, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at a Jonesport healthcare facility. He was born Sept. 21, 1913, the son of Orin and Phebe (Beal) Chandler. He was a member of the United Pentecostal Church of Jonesport, where he served as a Sunday school teacher. He was captain/owner of the fishing vessel “Burlie” for many years. He was the first commercial scallop dragger in Jonesport and was also a herring seiner supplying numerous fish canneries near and far. He had a great love and respect for the ocean. George was also a wonderful gardener who could grow anything. Everyone who knew him loved him and he will be missed by many. He loved cooking meals from the vegetables he grew and could also bake a tasty pie. He was predeceased by his wife, Alice Etta of 57 years, his parents, several brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife, Juanita of Belfast; one son, Burleigh and wife, Donalene, of Waltham; four daughter, Elna Davis and husband, Robert, of Jonesport, Etta Drisko and husband, Esten, of Beals, Marlene Shorey of Florida, and Georgia James and husband, David, of Canada; seven stepchildren, 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, three great-great-granddaughters; two brothers, Leo and Oscar; three sisters, Verlene, Elva and Sarah; one aunt, Elva Crowley of Jonesport, many cousins, nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the New United Pentecostal Church at Snare Creek, Jonesport, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, with the Rev. Steve Bertrand officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Jones-port. Arrangements are in the care of Bragdon-Kelley-Camp-bell Funeral Home, Machias.
