HAMPDEN – George O. Simard, 84, husband of Lena M. (Squires) Sim-ard, died Nov. 10, 2004, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. He was born Dec. 23, 1919, in Lynn, Mass., the son of Joseph and Jean (Anctil) Simard. George was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theatre and received the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He worked for the U.S. Army Natick Labs in research and development. After his retirement in 1974, George was self-employed as an expert seamster who made cushions and boat covers and almost anything made from fabric. If something needed to be made or fixed, he could do it. He passed this talent to his sons and grandsons. George and Lena were residents of Massachusetts and Standish, Maine, lived in Beverly Hills, Fla. for 15 years and returned to Maine in 2004 where they were members of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Hampden. His greatest sources of pride were his service to his country and his family. Surviving in addition to his wife of Hampden are four children, Peter W. Simard and his wife, Francena, of Cornish and Gloucester, Mass., Kenneth P. Simard and his wife, Donna, of Hollis, Christine S. Greenier and her husband, David, of Hampden and Jeanine M. Piccosi and her husband, Joseph, of Georgetown, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Michael Simard and Kathleen Werner, both of Colorado, David Simard of Saco, Lisa Stanton of Lyman, Gregory and Jeffrey Beswick, both of Hampden and Anthony Picossi of Georgetown, Mass.; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Loretta Fournier of Lakeland, Fla.; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five brothers and three sisters. Friends may visit 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Hampden, with the Rev. Robert Vaillancourt, pastor, celebrant. Burial at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta, with military honors, will be at a later date.
