LINCOLN – Walter Wingheart Cameron, 91, husband of the late Frances (Piraino) Cameron, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Nov. 9, 2004, at a Lincoln healthcare facility. He was born Oct. 1, 1913, in Brookton, the son of Audburaud and Lena (Bubar) Cameron. Walter married Frances, Dec. 17, 1937, in New York City. They moved from Brookton to Lincoln in 1944, where they owned and operated the Silver Star Cleaners until 1979. Walter was very active in the political field. He served on the Lincoln Town Council for a number of years, then in Augusta where he was a member of the 106th Legislature, served on the Governor’s Executive Council, and also served as a State Senator. He was often called upon to give opening prayer at legislative sessions. He received a “Remember Me” award at the State House in Augusta in 2003. Walter worked very hard to get Penobscot Valley Hospital up and going in Lincoln. He received the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Service Award for contributions to the community in 1984. Walter Cameron Day was celebrated, Saturday, Feb. 18, 1989. Walter was a member of Community Evangel Temple in Lincoln. He also was a member of the Rotary Club, the Shrine and the Masons. In addition to his wife, Frances, he was predeceased by his brothers and sisters. He is survived by special nieces, Fauna and Dawn Small of Camden, and two very special nephews, Jon Small of Bangor and Robert Cameron of Portland, as well as many uncles, nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. He also leaves two special friends, Donald and Charlotte Whitley of Lincoln. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Community Evangel Temple, River Road, Lincoln, with the Rev. Tim Shaw Officiating. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Brookton.
