ELLSWORTH – George Santillo, 87, died Dec. 5, 2007, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Pittsburgh in 1920, the son of James and Caroline Santillo. George grew up in Pittsburgh and Detroit, Mich. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. George worked as a professional photographer; he owned his own photographic color lab in New York City and Boston, creating color prints for many Fortune 500 advertising accounts. George was a longtime resident of Long Island, N.Y. He loved the outdoors and wrote and photographed stories on hunting and fishing for Outdoor Life and Field & Stream magazines. He photographed wildlife and exhibited the photos to the public in Ellsworth and Bangor. He contributed photo essays to the Ellsworth American, Ellsworth Weekly and the Bangor Daily News newspapers. George also worked as a real estate broker in Santa Barbara, Calif., for many years. He lived in, and loved, the Ellsworth area for more than 15 years. George is survived by his wife of 61 years, Josephine; daughter, Cynthia; and son, Gregory. His devotion to his family, his sense of humor and strong spirit will be sorely missed. Friends are invited to call 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ellsworth. Interment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Ellsworth.
