EASTPORT – George Such Harris Sr. passed away Dec. 5, 2005, after a short illness. George was born Nov. 22, 1929, the youngest child of Winslow and Marjorie (Coyle) Harris and lived his entire life in the family homestead at Harris Point. He attended local schools and married Jeannette S. Sullivan in Nov. 1946. While a teenager, he worked at Frankland’s factory and then worked for his father-in-law, A.B. Ramsdell for 18 years delivering fuel oil. During this time he also worked on the water, building weirs and taking out fishing parties. In the 1960’s, he and his nephew, Chester Harris, started the Passamaquoddy Yacht Company, building fiberglass boats. He was one of the first people in Eastport to become involved in salmon farming. George, along with his sister, Blanch, owned and ran the Harris Point Shore Cabins and Motel for many years. He was a member of the Anchor Lodge No. 41 Knights of Pythias, for more than 50 years and a past representative of the Supreme Lodge. He was also a member of the D.O.K.K. In August of 2005, George was honored at a reception, in Fredericton, N.B. by the Grand Domain of the Maritime Provinces and given a life membership to their Grand Lodge and Grand Temple. He is survived by his wife, Jeannie; four children, Lee M. Harris and his wife, Gloria, Linda L. Newcomb and her husband, Eugene, George S. Harris Jr. and his wife, Janna and Susan R. Garnett and her husband, Wayne; eight grandchildren, Shelley Arsenault and her husband, Robert, Shawn Harris and his wife, Denise, Tracy Gardner and her husband, Frank, Anthony Newcomb, John and Jason Garnett and Halie and Matthew Harris; and three great-grandchildren, Jodie and Alex Harris and Hayden Gardner; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Harris and Eleanor Harris; and many nieces nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; grandson, Eugene O. Newcomb Jr.; sisters, Thelma Richardson and Blanch Ramsdell; and brothers, Winslow, Chester and John Harris. Friends and family may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Flagg Funeral Home. Knights of Pythias service will be held 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday Dec. 7, at the funeral home with Pastor Sheldon Keezer officiating.
