ELLSWORTH – Georgette M. Goodwin, 88, died peacefully Dec. 30, 2005, in Ellsworth after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 12, 1917, in Westbrook, the daughter of William and Elfrida Morris. Georgette attended school in Westbrook and graduated from St. Hyacinth’s High School before going on to finishing school. Fluently speaking French and English, she was proud of both her French and Greek ancestry. She began what was to become a long career as a telephone operator and worked as a bilingual interpreter/operator at Bolling Field Military base in Washington, D.C. for four years. Georgette later became a telephone operator at the telephone office in Ellsworth, until its closure in 1978. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. On July 27, 1940, Georgette married Hugh A. Goodwin, the man that was to become her husband for 65 years. After completing the military, Hugh and Georgette lived in Westbrook and Ellsworth, where they began to raise their family. Georgette became a regular at the lunch counter at Newberry’s on Main Street in Ellsworth and could often be found there drinking coffee, chatting with Flossie and the other “girls” who congregated at the lunch counter frequently. Ellsworth became home for Georgette and she had many friends and fond memories that will live on into the next generation. She loved and was very proud of her home, enjoyed cooking and loved to talk and have friends and family stop by. Mom’s kitchen was always the central room in the house and three generations have spent hours in the glider rocker by her kitchen window. There was always something cooking in “nanny’s” kitchen. Georgette is survived and will be sadly missed by her husband, Hugh; a son, David and his wife, Nancy; a daughter, Pam and her husband, Mike Decker; and a son, Bill and his wife, Cindy; and a wonderfully special niece, Margie Nichols. She is also survived by grandchildren, Germain Hinkley, Janelle Jones, David Scott Goodwin and his sister, Britt Whitmore and Isaiah Lee Goodwin and his sister, Tory Carrier; great-grandchildren, Kelsey Bubier, David Jones, Bryan Jones, Andrew Jones, Cody Jones and Garrett W. Carrier. Georgette was predeceased by her two brothers and two sisters and a very special granddaughter, Stephanie “Taffy” Bubier-Decker. At her request there will be no memorial service. A spring interment will take place at the Franklin cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the multiple sclerosis society or the charity of your choice.
