NEWBURGH and BANGOR – Jean M. Shawley, 84, died peacefully Jan. 2, 2006, at her home, in Newburgh, with her daughter and family by her side. She was born Dec. 26, 1921, in Battle Grounds, Ind., the daughter of Charles and Iva (Hamilton) Hacker. Jean was raised by her grandfather, Hugh Hamilton. She lived in the Bangor gardens for more than 40 years with her husband, John, where she enjoyed his gardens and flowers. Jean was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be dearly missed. She is survived by her children, Basil Robbins of Michigan, John L. Shawley III of Newburgh, James M. Shawley of Stetson, Priscilla Sibley of Newburgh, Thomas C. Shaulus of North Berwick; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, John L. Shawley Jr. in 2002; and a brother, Theodore Hacker. By Jean’s request, she wanted private graveside prayer for the immediate family at Hillside Cemetery, Newburgh, with the Rev. Dr. Rex Garrett, chaplain of EMMC, officiating. A service of Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor.
