One of seven children, he was born Jan. 7, 1926, in Eagle Lake, to Phillip and Mabel (Dube). Gerald was a U.S. Army veteran and served as a rifleman in Germany in World War II. After the war, he returned home to marry his childhood sweetheart. They came to Connecticut in 1951 in search of work and settled in Naugatuck, Conn.
