LEVANT and LEESBURG, Fla. – Gerald O. Steeves, 83, passed away Feb. 7, 2008, at his home. He was born May 9, 1924, in Sangerville, son of Roy and Irene (Arnold) Steeves. Gerald graduated from Sangerville High School in 1942. He went into the Army Air Force, February 1943, going to the South Pacific as a radio operator in the 5th Air Force. Gerald was proud to serve in the Army Air Force in the Philippines and New Guinea during World War II. He came home, August 1945 and married his high school sweetheart and soul mate, Charlotte J. Finley of Greenville Junction. They were married 62 years. They have lived in Levant for two years, moving there from Augusta. Gerald loved the outdoors and was a fisherman and hunter for many years. He worked for 23 years at the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad and retired from Bridge Construction as a safety director after 18 years. Gerald was a member of Green Street United Methodist Church, Augusta and was attending South China Community Church, South China, before moving to Levant. He was a past master of Columbia Lodge Masons, where he was a 61-year member. Gerald became a Shriner at Kora Temple, Lewiston and was a life member of Kora Karts. He was also a past commander of Towne Holmbom American Legion Post of Monson. Gerald is now a member at large of American Legion, Waterville. He and his wife enjoyed 18 years of retirement in Leesburg, Fla., where they purchased a home. They traveled there every October, returning to Maine in May to their cottage on Three Mile Pond, Windsor. They also traveled to many places in the U.S. and Canada with their best friends, Robert and Joyce Brown. After retirement, Gerald and his wife belonged to the senior golf group at Western View Golf Club, Augusta. They also played golf with a group of seniors from their Mobile Home Park, Brittany Estates of Leesburg, Fla. Gerald is survived by his wife, Charlotte; brother, Lawrence and his wife, Gloria, of Pennsylvania and Arizona; sisters, Beverly Hamilton and her husband, Orvis, of Phoenix, Shirley Sacks and her husband, Sumner, of Massachusetts and Arizona; a sister-in-law, Alice Tweedie and her husband, Robert, of West Enfield; brother- in-law, David Finley and his wife, Vivian, of Hermon; and many nieces and nephews, whom he was very close to. Spring interment will be at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Augusta, at a date and time to be announced.
