BREWER and ALGIERS, La. – Gerald P. “Butch” Hainer, 74, retired merchant mariner, passed on April 3, 2006, in Algiers Parish, New Orleans, La. He was born Feb. 3, 1932, in Bangor, the son of Stanley Hainer and Gladys (Morrison) Hainer. He was predeceased by his parents and six brothers. Butch was a 1950 graduate of Brewer High School and a 1953 graduate of Maine Maritime Academy. At both schools, he was a tough, hard-nosed halfback on their football teams. He sailed as a merchant marine from 1953 until he retired in 1995, including active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1957. He was a member of St. Johns Lodge No. 153 F&AM and a York Rite Mason. Whether it was cribbage, crosswords, crab boils, the New Orleans Saints, lobster, Coffee Pots, or drinking Moxie, Butch was The Chief to us all, and he will be lovingly and dearly missed. He is survived by his loving wife, Grace McAnespy Creath Hainer of Algiers, La.; daughters, Susan McCallum and her husband, John, of Hampden, and Theresa Hainer and her husband, Skip Howard, of Winterport; sons, Dana Hainer and his wife, Cheryl, of Southside, Ala., Dr. Mark Hainer and his wife, Marlene, of San Antonio, Texas, and Andrew Hainer of Portland; his first wife, Deloros Hainer of Hampden; stepsons, Hilliard Creath of Algiers, La., and Eric Creath and his wife, Kathy, of Marrero, La.; his sister, Carolyn Blanchard of Cum-berland Center; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A service for family members will be held 5-6 p.m. Friday, April 7, followed by visiting hours 6-10 p.m. for friends and relatives at Mothe Funeral Home, 1300 Vallette St., Algiers, LA, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2006.
